Spirit Airlines is planning to launch seven new routes this May, including two to Puerto Rico.

The ultra-low-cost carrier confirmed Thursday it’s planning to launch nonstop service to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, P.R. from two continental U.S. airports: Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).

The routes launch May 8 and 9 respectively.

Additionally, the Miramar, Florida-based carrier said it would add five additional routes, four of which will originate from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Plus, it’s adding a new daily nonstop from New York City.

Spirit’s new routes

Here’s the full list of new routes Spirit unveiled Thursday:

  • IAH-SJU — launches May 8, operates four times weekly
  • MSY-SJU — launches May 9, operates three times weekly
  • BWI to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) — launches May 9, operates twice daily
  • BWI-MSY — launches May 9, operates five times weekly
  • BWI to Portland International Airport (PDX) — launches May 8, operates four times weekly.
  • BWI to San Diego International Airport (SAN) — launches May 9, operates three times weekly.
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) — launches May 8, operates daily.

Of those seven new routes, Spirit counts two as “resumptions.” It flew a limited number of flights from BWI to Boston in 2021 and 2022, and a much fuller schedule before that, Cirium data shows.

And, Spirit operated a BWI-to-New Orleans nonstop as recently as 2022, per Cirium.

Growing presence in San Juan

As of May, Spirit will serve around a dozen U.S. mainland airports from San Juan.

CIRIUM

Its new nonstops to Puerto Rico come as U.S. low-cost airlines have increasingly focused on San Juan, fueling something of a turf war.

Frontier recently announced plans to open a crew base in San Juan, and included some new flights from the city as part of a much larger network shakeup in January.
