It’s hard to keep hot cocoa mix in the house these days. We’re going through buckets of it. But the store-bought mix has more sugar and other ingredients that just aren’t needed to make a rich, satisfying cup of cocoa.
My Homemade Rich Cocoa Mix contains only 3 ingredients: Baking cocoa, powdered sugar, and instant milk powder (NOT that non-dairy powdered coffee creamer stuff.)
Every year when the weather gets chilly, it takes me a while to get into the grove of making this hot cocoa mix. I originally published this recipe it in 2012. But now that I’m totally into making it again, I couldn’t keep it buried on this blog. So here it is…updated and with a few new photos. (:
Most homemade hot cocoa mixes contain dry non-dairy creamer. Those creamers contain all sorts of fillers which are completely unnecessary for a cup of rich hot cocoa. Instead, I use instant non-fat dry milk, which is just pure milk, with the water removed. So kids (or anyone) get the goodness of protein- and calcium-rich real milk, antioxidants from the dark cocoa, and a little sweetness. Make your own rich and frothy: Hot Cocoa Mix. It makes a great gift. Via @TspCurry Click To Tweet
I’ve even been known to serve this healthy, milk-rich cocoa mix at breakfast, lunch, and dinner when we run out of milk, and it’s just too cold to go to the store.
Happy sipping. Or, happy sipping for your kids’ teachers – as it makes a great teacher’s gift.
Make your own Rich Hot Cocoa Mix for a rich, frothy cup of hot chocolate, that’s a fraction of the cost of store-bought mix. Or, mix in a Mason jar and give as gifts.
2 cups instant dry milk
1/3 cup baking cocoa
1 cup powdered sugar
Optional mix-ins: marshmallows, crushed candy canes, a splash of vanilla
Mix together dry milk, cocoa, and powdered sugar; store in an air-tight container.
To reconstitute 1 serving, stir 1/3 cup cocoa mix into 1 cup hot water or warm milk. Top with a splash of vanilla extract, or other mix-ins, if desired.
How do you drink your hot cocoa? With vanilla? Or, with something stronger?
