The Callaway White Box Testing Opportunity

Callaway has completely revamped their golf ball lineup with the new Chrome Tour series. This revamp shifts focus and looks to target the better players who may have not taken Callaway golf balls as seriously as they might have in the past.

The new Chrome Soft remains in the lineup. However, the focus for this testing opportunity is on the all-new Chrome Tour, which replaces the previously named Chrome Soft X LS and the Chrome Tour X that replaces the prior general Chrome Soft X

We selected 40 golfers to test, review, keep and report back to us on their findings of these new Callaway golf balls. Each tester received a dozen white box golf balls: six Callaway Chrome Tour and six Callaway Chrome Tour X

Testers were asked to play these golf balls and provide feedback to us on the Forum to highlight certain performance aspects.

About The Testing Group

Age Ranges

As with all MyGolfSpy Forum tests, we aim to get a wide variety of testers to make the reviews relevant to you, the real golfer. This testing opportunity was no different with testers’ ages ranging from 14 to mid 70s.

We included golfers who frequently hit the links to ensure these new golf balls got tested as thoroughly as possible!

Handicap Range

For this Forum Member Review of Callaway white box golf balls, a focus was placed on the “better golfer”, meaning testers generally had lower handicaps. While these balls are not exclusively intended for low handicap golfers, handicaps for this group of testers was between +4 and 10.5.

Golf Ball Preferences

We asked our testers what brand of golf ball they normally play. Titleist led the way, which is not a huge surprise. Callaway and TaylorMade users were about equal and a handful used other brands (Srixon, Bridgestone and more). This variety helped give us a broad range of perspectives.

What Testers Found: Performance

Performance:

  • Both balls received praise for their performance around the green, good spin and overall feel.

Feel and Softness:

  • Others preferred the Chrome Tour versus the Tour X.
  • The Chrome Tour X was generally appreciated for its feel, although some noted a bit too much spin, particularly off the tee.
  • Generally, those who liked a firmer golf ball preferred the Chrome Tour X.

Comparisons with Other Brands:

  • Comparisons were made with other popular golf ball brands like Titleist and TaylorMade.
  • Many testers felt the Chrome Tour could compete with or even surpass their current balls in terms of distance, performance and durability.

Triple Track Alignment:

  • The Triple Track alignment feature received positive comments, particularly for putting and aiming off the tee.

Durability:

Direct From The Testers

While it is great to get a summary of the testing group’s feedback, often it is best to get the direct quotes. In the end many of the testers are just like you or me. What they say certainly relates to us more than what the companies themselves can say. These testers have no skin in the game and just want to provide open and honest feedback to help you make better informed purchase decisions. Here is what they had to say.

Tester Quotes:

“The Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X are on my short list of balls I would consider gaming throughout the year. I do believe the Chrome Tour specifically will help improve my game off the tee and around the green. To me, this ball is a big leap into the premium golf ball market.”

“The Chrome Tour X is an exceptional ball. I love it for iron interaction and performs well with the driver. The more I play this ball the more I like it. The liveliness off the club face is exciting to feel and the results are pleasing.”

“Loved both balls – the Chrome Tour X gave me the most distance – as an aging golfer, distance off the tee translates to lower scores.”

“I was surprised by how much I preferred the Chrome Tour X to my usual Chrome Soft Truvis or Pro V1x balls, but the Tour X was the best ball that I have tried so far. I compared the Chrome Tour, Tour X and Bridgestone BX balls for a few rounds and the Chrome Tour X was the clear winner”

Pretty glowing reviews. Were there any downsides? Of course. Not all golf balls will work for all golfers, just like not all golf clubs will work for all golfers. That being said, the golfers who tested these and didn’t love them still came away impressed by the performance. A few found small issues or felt one or the other to be a little too soft or too firm. However, as most of us are aware, feel is a very golfer-dependent trait.

Final Verdict

After the testing was completed, what were the general findings? Would our testers be making the switch to the new Chrome Tour and Tour X, away from their gamers? Let’s find out.

Overall Impression:

  • Overall, testers expressed satisfaction and excitement about the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X.
  • The feedback was positive, highlighting significant improvements over previous Callaway ball models.
  • The Chrome Tour was considered a significant leap into the premium golf ball market for Callaway.

Potential Concerns:

  • Some concerns were raised about excessive spin, especially with the Tour X, leading to shots backing up significantly.
  • Feel for some golfers was too firm or too soft and they preferred their gamers.

Final Thoughts:

  • Testers acknowledged improvements in the new Chrome series compared to previous generations.
  • The Chrome Tour X was perceived as a potential upgrade for some, while others found it to be a better fit for their game.
  • The positive performance and feedback may influence purchasing decisions.

Tester Quotes

“Chrome Tour X is a great ball and I look forward to playing it more in the future.”

“I will certainly be a purchaser of the Chrome Tour ball. With everything else being somewhat equal I really like the way the ball looks on the tee and fairways with hex pattern.”

“Chrome Tour does everything I want a golf ball to do. I will be changing to this ball this year.”

This was a great testing opportunity that provided a lot of valuable data, information and feedback on the new Callaway Chrome Tour series of golf balls.

While not every tester will be making the switch, a significant majority will, having found gains with the new Callaway balls. The goal for Callaway was to make significant strides in improving their premium golf ball lineup. Based on the results from our testers, it is pretty clear to say they have accomplished this.
