Affordable hidden food centre with nasi lemak, nasi ayam Singapore, & vegetarian options

While exploring Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, you may have observed its abundance of upscale and pricey dining establishments. While you certainly appreciate a delicious meal, it can be disheartening to receive the bill. However, here’s an exciting revelation— there’s an affordable food hub located right next to the mall! At Tapak Penjaja Wisma Genting, you can relish local delicacies without straining your wallet.
This small lorong can be found nestled between Wisma Genting and Wisma Cosway, and it’s conveniently close to Pavilion. It’s a common sight to see office workers here during the early morning or busy lunch hours, and this hidden gem is typically discovered through word of mouth.
The stalls in this area are managed by experienced aunties and uncles who have been operating their businesses for many years. As someone who has been dining at this cosy spot since my childhood, it’s always a delight to encounter these familiar faces from time to time.
What I tried at Tapak Penjaja Wisma Genting
To begin, I opted for the Nasi Lemak Kukus at Nasi Lemak Hilton Corner (L1). My choice included fish and a fried egg (RM7). The serving size was notably ample, featuring a good portion of fragrant steamed coconut rice, a substantial serving of fish with its flavourful gravy, a fried egg, and a generous helping of sambal.
The fish exhibited a tender and delicate texture, and the gravy possessed a deep umami-like richness, with a savoury taste to complement it. Conversely, the fried egg soaked up all the rich fish gravy and sambal, creating an utterly delicious combination of flavours.
The sambal offered a pleasant sweetness with a subtle sambal belacan spiciness that was well-balanced and not excessively strong. It also had a thin consistency, which allowed the sambal to mix well with the other elements of the dish.
Spring Spring Coffee: Cat cafe serving okonomiyaki seafood don, beef don & delectable pastries
My dining partner decided to go for the Curry Chicken with Fried Egg and Squid (RM10), which he generously shared with me. He got a bit carried away with the curry gravy though, resulting in a plate that resembled nasi lemak banjir.
He mentioned that the chicken was wonderfully tender, with the meat effortlessly separating from the bone. The curry itself resembled a classic Malaysian curry, with a thin and soupy consistency.
He pointed out that the curry gravy was exceptionally savoury and paired perfectly with the sambal. The squid offered a delightful tenderness, introducing a pleasing textural contrast to the dish.
We then shared the Dry Minced Chicken Noodle (RM7) from Chun Kee (L4). The bihun noodles came with minced chicken and chicken shreds, and a generous helping of kicap (soy sauce). It also came with soup with fishballs and fuchuk (tofu skin).
The bihun noodles exhibited a delightful springiness in texture. While the kicap on its own contributes a pleasing sweetness, its true excellence comes forth when it melds with the soup, resulting in a delightful union of sweet and salty flavours that beautifully infuses both the noodles and the soup.
Final thoughts
A trip to Tapak Penjaja Wisma Genting is definitely worthwhile, particularly due to the dedicated aunties and uncles who continue to offer their delectable food, maintaining a consistently delicious taste over the years.
Please be aware that Nasi Lemak Hilton Corner operates exclusively from 7.30am to 12pm, as a nasi campur stall takes over from 12pm to 2pm. Thankfully, the owner’s brother runs a Nasi Ayam Singapore stall (L3) that serves equally delicious food from 11am to 2pm.
It’s essential to note that most of the stalls here have their own specific operating hours, so it’s advisable to check in advance. Additionally, cash payments are preferred at most stalls, but they also accept QR payments for your convenience.
