O
nce it’s Grammy week, the anticipatory mood becomes dense in the air. Last week, the 2024 Recording Academy Honors by Black Music Collective and movie premieres saw celebrities like Halle Bailey showing off glitzy vibes, but it seemed the stars saved their energies for the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party and the Grammys itself. The pre-parties led up to the iconic Grammys on Sunday night, and there was no coming back from the distinctive getups. Although this year soft-pedaled on over-the-top shimmers and leaned toward unique cuts and fabrics, it still delivered on major slay.
The looks
All week long, Janelle Monáe served outfits like a chef in her prime would — sizzling and tasteful. She was nominated in both the “Best Progressive R&B Album” and the “Album of the Year” categories in recognition of her album, The Age of Pleasure. The excited Grammy nominee took to the opportunity to reiterate her IT girl status with back-to-back elaborate looks. In one instance, she wore art like a garment — a handmade Rahul Mishra attire embellished with a dragonfly centered in a make-believe Petri dish from the designer’s Haute Couture offering. In another (for the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party), she opted for an all-black bralette and maxi skirt decorated with gold rosette details. No doubt, the singer has a way with effortless sophistication.
Sabrina Elba was a delight in Paris, serving couture like a three-course meal. And then in London, she kicked off love month hand in hand with her dandy hubby, Idris. For the One Love movie premiere, she slipped into a simple deep neckline dress and a fur coat that was heavy on sass. The model further accentuated the look with a layered pearl necklace and, of course, her poise.
For the 15 Percent Pledge Benefit Gala, during Grammy weekend, Kelly Rowland wore a draped Benchellal number that underscored her fashion sensibilities. The brown dress sat proudly on her frame, and with the designer’s goal to seamlessly merge sculpture with couture, it was a win. This was a look worthy to be called art and placed in the museum to be wondered at for ages to come.
