Do you ever struggle with sharing the Gospel with others? Do you want to be faithful to obey Jesus’ command to preach the Gospel but just aren’t sure how to actually do this in your life?
Please know that confusion and doubts about how to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others is something that many Christians now and throughout history have experienced. This is an issue that I personally have greatly struggled with throughout my faith journey.
I knew that sharing the Gospel message was something Jesus wanted me to do, but talking with others does not come naturally to me and I had no clue how to start a conversation like this with people I knew.
But there is hope! If God has called us to do a good work, then He will fully equip us to accomplish it, right? Let us first talk about what evangelism even means. There is a lot of controversy even within Christian circles about what evangelism is supposed to look like.
However, the word evangelize means to proclaim the good message or bring glad tidings; literally, “gospelizing.” Evangelism merely is sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ with others.
So why is evangelism important? Think about how you have experienced God’s love and how dramatically your life has changed since you accepted Christ as your Savior. God has saved you, given you hope, equipped you with a plan and a purpose, and blessed you abundantly through your faith in Christ.
Don’t you want other people– family, friends, neighbors, even those you have never met halfway across the world– to experience this life transformation? This is not possible if they have never heard of the hope of Jesus Christ. God has called us to be the ones to share this message with them. What a privilege!
God had compassion on you as a sheep without a Shepherd before He drew you into His arms, giving you the faith to believe. He wants to do the same thing for all people who are wandering through life hurt, confused, broken, hopeless, and searching for answers in all the wrong places.
We also should want to share the Gospel because Jesus commanded us to preach the good news to others. As Christians, we long to model our lives after His example and learn to be obedient to His commands and His ways. Part of this lifestyle includes a willingness to share the message of salvation through Christ with others.
So what exactly is the message that we are to be sharing with others? What does it mean to preach the Gospel? I think many times we make things too complicated.
Ultimately, we need to explain that: 1) All humans are sinners and separated from God, and 2) Jesus Christ died for the forgiveness of our sins, reconciling us with God. In order to be saved, a person must confess their sins and accept that Jesus Christ is Lord, giving their lives to Christ.
We have talked about what the message is and why you should share it, but how do you go about doing this in your life? This is where the adventure of living out our faith comes into play.
Each person you interact with is unique, but remember that God has also given you an incredible story to share. Although a person may have a different view of God or of the church, a person cannot argue with your personal experience with God.
Sharing how God has worked in your own life can have a powerful impact on the willingness of someone to be receptive to the Gospel.
Always be prayerful about the words you are to use and speak to others out of love and compassion. Pray that God will give you gracious words and allow you to truly listen to the person’s heart. Remember that the Holy Spirit will give you the things you need.
Only God can cause faith to take root in a person’s heart; we just need to be faithful to share His message.
Whether you are explaining the good news of Christ to foreigners on the mission field or whether God opens the door for you to talk about your faith in the grocery store, God has given us a phenomenal privilege to partner with Him as He transforms lives with the powerful message that we are saved in Christ alone.
