[ad_1]

Use these Bible verses about discipleship to see how God’s Word talks about how to be a good disciple yourself and how to lead and serve others well.

What is a Disciple?

The term disciple is not only a biblical term, but a word that captures the essence of someone who follows the life, teachings, and practices of another. This is what Christ calls believers to live like. To be a disciple of Jesus is to follow Christ’s life, His example, and His teachings.

We can find many Bible verses about discipleship in the gospels, and various other parts of Scripture. Jesus’ own words sum it up so beautifully in Luke 9:23, “Then He said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, and in our knowledge of His word, we learn more and more about what it looks like to be a disciple and to follow Him daily.

What is Discipleship?

When Jesus was getting ready to ascend into heaven, He left His disciples with one last instruction.

In Matthew 28:18-19 it says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus was a living example to His disciples and had taught them, and they learned from His life and His teachings.

But Jesus did not only intend for them to follow Him, He meant for them to make disciples, and share the gospel with others so that they might come to be disciples of Christ themselves.

Discipleship takes place when a believer comes alongside another believer, usually someone who is young in their faith, to study the Bible with them, pray with them, and be a support for them in their walk with Christ.

This discipleship is not only a means of transferring information from one person to another but doing life together as Christ calls us to.

If you want to grow as a disciple of Jesus or want to learn more about disciplining and mentoring others, these discipleship Bible verses are a great place to start.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

17. Titus 2:1-8 – Teaching What Is In Accord With Sound Doctrine

You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.

Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

22. Mark 1:16-22 – Fishers Of Men

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.

Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
