Wendy Williams Unfiltered A Documentary Drenched in Pain and Sadness

[ad_1]

When “Where is Wendy Williams?” Wendy Williams Unfiltered A Documentary debuted on Lifetime this past weekend, it startled viewers by showing multiple instances of the former daytime talk show host in an unstable emotional condition while dealing with issues with her physical and mental health.

Executive producers of the documentary, Mark Ford and Erica Hanson, expressed comparable surprise and alarm over the results of their eight months of filming. The goal in creating the four and a half-hour presentation was to depict Williams’s life in an open and caring manner without disclosing her dementia diagnosis. Williams was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition that can impede communication, and primary progressive aphasia last year, according to a recent announcement from Williams’s care team.

According to Hanson, “telling Wendy’s story with dignity and responsibility was a labor of love for us.”

In a Tuesday interview with The Washington Post, the producers maintained their decision to air Williams’s uncomfortable moments despite knowing about her diagnosis, saying they hoped it would start a discussion about guardianships.

The interview has been condensed to improve clarity and duration.

What is the reaction of Williams’s family and viewers to the documentary?

Ford There has been an extraordinary quantity of polarizing perspectives in the huge response. It would be, as we always knew. However, we believe it brings up a very significant issue, which is what happens to a person placed under guardianship that is not within their family’s jurisdiction.

Before and after the documentary aired, we had conversations with the family. Naturally, they’re overawed by the volume of comments and support. However, they were and still are quite supportive of the subject.

Hanson: We are aware that it can be difficult to watch at times. It may be depressing and terrible, and that’s how filming it was as well. But it was really vital to us to be able to reveal the truth about Wendy’s life during that time she was under guardianship. It’s also been fascinating to observe how viewers respond with the same level of knowledge and empathy.

Q: During filming, what surprised you the most?

Ford The most startling aspect of the documentary’s filming was that everything you see was shot while Wendy was meant to be in the custody of a guardian designated by the court to look after her health and money.

If any of our family members are placed in the care of a guardian, they may get care comparable to that provided by the well-known Wendy Williams. There are a ton of other families out there that lack a forum on which to share their narratives. None of us went into this movie expecting it to be about guardianship. However, we couldn’t ignore that reality.

Hanson Sometimes the truth is uncomfortable. And in this case, telling the truth was difficult in order to expose someone’s frailty.

To what extent did Wendy participate in the documentary’s production? Were you uncomfortable displaying her in such a vulnerable way?

Hanson
Wendy and I had daily conversations about our work. She had an opinion on whether or not to participate in the shooting, and she knew everything we were doing. If she was finished for the day, she would inform us. Our goal was to achieve equilibrium. To truly convey what she was going through, it was crucial to depict things that might occasionally be tough to see. We immediately stopped filming after learning the diagnosis. She had to make decisions about how to live in her world on a daily basis.

Ford
The narrative changed to the family’ perspective regarding Wendy’s guardianship and the caliber of care she was receiving when the diagnosis was revealed. We didn’t actually do any more filming than that.

Wendy served as its EP. She held views. Erica questioned her at the start of the documentary, “Are there any things you’re not comfortable with? Are there any lines in this place that we need not to cross? Saying, “No, ask me anything,” Wendy said. That accurately describes the Wendy that we all know and adore.
