Shawnee Station Taproom & Kitchen Debuts from Maumee Bay Brewing
[ad_1]
Today the owners of Toledo’s Maumee Bay Brewing Company open their first venture in central Ohio, Shawnee Station Taproom & Kitchen. The companion brewery offers a new name, modern space, and upgraded menu, all situated in a new build on Glick Road in Shawnee Hills, right across the O’Shaughnessy Dam from the Columbus Zoo. (At the other end of the strip is Boston Stoker’s newer coffee shop.)
Maumee Bay’s original location in downtown Toledo makes its home in an historic brick building dating to the late 1800s. (You can see some of it in our post Two Days in Toledo.) By comparison, Shawnee Station is much more modern, with natural woods, calming blues, and generally unadorned walls.
There’s a large bar to one side, with seating both inside the restaurant and on the all-season patio.
The beer menu currently features about a dozen Maumee Bay brews. I’m not sure if they’ll brew any branded Shawnee Station beers, but there is a small brewing system next to the kitchen. At our preview dinner, I tasted their Doppelbock.
They also feature a small collection of wines and cocktails, like this margarita.
The menu offers a spin on the original brewpub’s tavern-style menu, with several upgrades. It seems like a must to order the giant Bavarian pretzels, which arrives suspended on a rod with sides of honey mustard and beer cheese.
The blue crab pimento cheese dip was one of our favorite bites of the meal. It’s served with house-made pork rinds, naan, celery, and green onion.
The starters menu also features one-pound servings of wings with a variety of sauces.
The menu continues with a collection of salads, flatbreads, soups, and sandwiches like this nod to their Lake Erie origins, the panko-crusted walleye sandwich with jalapeno, sesame-pepper slaw, avocado, and a sweet chili mayo.
You’ll also find a smashburger, BLT, and the crispy chicken sandwich with arugula, spicy garlic aioli, bourbon bacon, and onion jam.
Entrees range from tuna poke bowl, roasted Amish chicken, blue crab baked gnocchi, steak frites. Here’s the chimichurri hangar steak, served with potatoes, roasted tomatoes, and a pepper jelly.
The line-caught halibut is served with olive oil-poached potatoes, olive ragout, saffron butter, and a petite herb salad.
Shawnee Station features a private event room as well.
And a size-able all-season patio, complete with fireplace.
