Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring Review: Thoughts From A Homeowner 3 Years Later

Almost 6 years ago, we moved into our current home.  It was actually a big adjustment as we transitioned from a newly-built 4-story modern condo in the hip Knox/Henderson neighborhood of Dallas into a 1968 single-story home in a sleepy North Dallas neighborhood that was bordering suburbia.  We knew moving into this home that there would be several remodeling projects on our todo list, but top priority for me was updating the floors!  All the bedrooms had dingy carpeting in place, and combined with the low ceilings, it made the space feel smaller than it really was.

I am actually pretty lucky to know a custom home builder here in DFW with lots of experience in high-end homes especially.  He recommended that I look into luxury vinyl plank flooring as it was the option he was using in almost all of his modern homes and seeing great results.  I did a great deal of research at the time but also took a small leap of faith based on my friend’s recommendations (see the master bedroom flooring before/after!).  Now 3 years later I can honestly say that choosing engineered luxury wood flooring was one of the best decisions!

If you’re in the market and considering the upgrade to luxury vinyl plank flooring, read on for a detailed breakdown of why I have been so happy with our resilient flooring choice.

What Is Resilient Flooring?

Let’s start with some basics first and understand what is meant by “resilient flooring.”

Resilient flooring is a category of flooring and is defined as flooring that is firm, yet has a certain amount of “give” or bounce back.  The flooring is created from carefully selected natural and synthetic materials, a combination that makes it extremely durable and ideal for high-traffic locations. Luxury vinyl plank flooring is a kind of resilient flooring, along with other options such as vinyl composition tile, sheet vinyl, linoleum, cork, and rubber.  They’ve quickly become popular for both residential and commercial use, and there is such a wide array of different styles / designs that there is an option for every space!

Durability: Water + Stain Resistant

We have a full house with two young kids and a cat in the mix, so top priority for us when picking new flooring was to make sure that it could withstand the stresses of our everyday life.  I’m so happy to say that even now after 3 years, our floors still look brand new!  Our floors are water and stain resistant so I don’t have to worry about the kids tracking water from the bathroom or spilled liquids from messy art projects anymore now (Mei even spilled nail polish once 😱 and it came out without any sort of flooring damage!).  These floors even have built-in mold and mildew prevention, so it’s added peace of mind especially as a parent!

I’ve also been so grateful for our new floors when it comes to cleaning up after my cat.  If you’re a pet owner, you know all about the hair, odor, and occasional bathroom messes that can happen.  These new floors have made pet cleanup super easy with no elbow grease needed and I haven’t noticed trapped smells ever!

Sound Damping & Warmth

A concern that was brought up when I mentioned removing our carpeting in favor of luxury vinyl plank flooring was that it would make for a less cozy bedroom as well as increased noise.  Thankfully this is an issue that resilient flooring addresses directly and the luxury vinyl plank flooring option that we chose is designed specifically with sound absorption and warmth in mind!  There is a felt layer designed into the multilayer floor planks that provides for cushioning and noise damping.  So, regardless of whether you have a open floorplan home or a small condo, this is still a flooring option that will fit your lifestyle!

Beautiful & Affordable

There are resilient flooring styles to match every taste.  Even when it came to sifting through the luxury vinyl plank flooring that had the hardwood look we wanted in our case, there were a multitude of options that we could adjust including color, texture, and design.  Being able to easily agree on a flooring look that matched both me and my husband’s taste was key and ultimately we’re both so happy with the end result!

Cost is definitely a factor when it comes to home improvement projects.  I love the look of hardwood, but not only is maintenance an issue, but it’s also expensive!  With luxury vinyl plank flooring, we were able to choose a top-of-the-line option and still pay less than what we would have paid for a hardwood installation.  Our resilient flooring choice meant that we enjoyed the benefits of a floor that looks like real wood, can endure the wear and tear of a messy chaotic household, and keep us within our budget!

New floors are a big decision.  I’m so glad we ended up choosing our luxury vinyl plank flooring option as I have seen how it not only transformed the look of our outdated home interior, but it has also been the perfect fit for our busy lifestyle!  Resilient floors hold up under tough love, heavy traffic, and yet never show their age.  It’s been one of the best investments we made when updating our home!

Have you ever thought about updating the flooring in your home?
