Jemimah Rodrigues Seeks Guidance from Meg Lanning as WPL 2024 Approaches

As the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 gears up for its opening match, young Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues has expressed her admiration for Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning’s leadership style. Lanning, a five-time ICC World Cup champion and former Australian skipper, is known for her calm and composed demeanour on the field.

“There’s so much to learn from her,” Rodrigues said in a recent interview with JioCinema. “She is not someone who would demand respect. She just walks in and everyone automatically has that respect for her. Just walking with her, up close and personal, I never thought I would get that opportunity.”

Lanning’s Journey from Youngest Captain to World Champion

Lanning’s leadership journey began in 2014 when she became the youngest-ever Australian captain at the age of 21. Since then, she has led her team to numerous victories, including a T20 World Cup title in her first year as captain.

“In fact, I spoke to her regarding captaincy and how she dealt with it,” Rodrigues added. “She was made captain at a very young age. And captaincy is so much more than on the field, there are so many things you have to handle and on top of that, your own batting.”

Learning from a Legend:

Rodrigues, who is the vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals, sees this opportunity to play alongside Lanning as a valuable learning experience. She is particularly interested in understanding Lanning’s approach to captaincy, both on and off the field.

“It was a good conversation and I’m sure I’ll get so much more to learn from her,” Rodrigues expressed.

Lanning’s Continued Impact on the Game:

Despite retiring from international cricket in November 2023, Lanning continues to leave her mark on the game through franchise cricket. She is a key player for the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League and is now set to lead the Delhi Capitals in the WPL.

The opening match of the WPL on February 23rd will see the Delhi Capitals take on the defending champions Mumbai Indians. With Lanning at the helm and Rodrigues eager to learn, this promises to be an exciting clash between two strong teams.

Rodrigues’ admiration for Lanning highlights the power of leadership by example. As the WPL unfolds, it will be interesting to see how much Rodrigues can learn from the legendary captain and how her own game develops under Lanning’s guidance.
