Homemade Chocolate Uncrustable is perfect for breakfast

I recently bought an uncrustable maker. And the kids love it!

An uncrustable maker magically transforms boring sandwiches into special treats. What used to be just a sandwich now becomes a moon. Or it becomes a round sled. Even more, a sandwich can become a trampoline!

I don’t usually encourage playing with food. However, this is an exception for good reason.

An uncrustable maker seals the sandwich together very nicely. Therefore, the fillings never fall out while the kids eat (or play). No sticky fingers!

We’ve tried a lot of different fillings since buying our uncrustable maker. In our experience, you can easily go sweet or savory.

One of our favorites is homemade chocolate uncrustable. So that’s why I’m sharing the recipe today! Hopefully you and your family will love this too.

What chocolate spread to use for uncrustables?

This is the most important question when making a chocolate uncrustable!

If you are making a copy cat chocolate uncrustable, I would suggest you use Nutella. Smucker’s Uncrustables, the kind you buy at the store, uses a chocolate hazelnut spread.

However, I have found a chocolate spread that I think is even more delicious. Plus, it’s way healthier.

Barney Butter makes a delicious Almond Butter with Chocolate. We love it! It’s super smooth. And it has just the right amount of sweetness.

Personally, after trying several different chocolate spreads, this is my favorite. Compared to Nutella, Barney Butter chocolate spread wins. It’s so good and great for eating at breakfast.

One reason is that it’s smooth and easy to spread. Plus, there’s only 2g of added sugar per serving. That’s compared to 21g of added sugar in each serving of Nutella!

It’s the perfect spread for making chocolate uncrustables!

Using the cool maker is the most fun part of making homemade uncrustables!

Which uncrustable maker is best?

There are a lot of different uncrustable makers on Amazon. It took me a while to find one I love.

This is the one I use. And I think it works great!

The one I have makes the classic Smucker’s Uncrustables edge shape. Some of the other sandwich sealers end up giving the sandwich a wavy edge. Not good if your kids are picky or extra observant.

Simple two step process

Using the uncrustable maker takes 2 steps. With your prepared sandwich, first you use the plain circle cutter to cut off the crust. Second, you push the sealer mould down to make the perfect sealed edge.

Voila! Your homemade uncrustable is done!

Tips for this homemade chocolate uncrustable recipe

This is a very simple recipe. But here are a few tips below. My goal is to help you make the best homemade uncrustable ever.

Use a soft bread

Using a soft bread will make the best uncrustables. That’s because the bread will not split or crack when you use the circle cutter and sealer.

I have good success using Wonder Bread or Nature’s Own Honey Wheat. Other sandwich sliced breads will likely work fine too.

While we usually eat whole wheat breads, they don’t work well for homemade uncrustables. Unfortunately, the texture of such loaves don’t hold up with the sandwich cutter. Instead, the uncrustable will often crack open.

Don’t use too much spread

It’s surprising how easily the filling of an uncrustable will overflow. As such, when you make your sandwich, don’t layer on too much spread.

Take a look at the photo below. See how some of the chocolate spread is on the sealed edge?

That brings me to the third tip.

Keep the filing in the center

There’s no need to spread your filling all the way around the sandwich bread. Therefore, try to keep the filling in the center of the sandwich. By doing so, the spread won’t ooze out when you try to cut and seal the sandwich.

Enjoy this delicious chocolate uncrustable

I really hope you enjoy this recipe. While it’s super simple, hopefully these tips and recs will help. Now you can make your own healthier version of chocolate uncrustable too!
