What is your most outstanding dance achievement?

One of my proudest moments as a dancer was performing solo in a prestigious international dance competition. It was an incredible experience to share the stage with some of the world’s most talented dancers and to be recognized for my artistry and dedication. That achievement pushed me to strive for excellence continually.

However, achievement takes countless hours of practice, discipline, and dedication.

 

How did you initially get into dance?

Hmmm! That is a fantastic question. Early as a child, parents noticed my fascination with music and rhythm and enrolled me in a local dance class. From the moment I took my first dance steps, I was hooked. The sense of freedom and self-expression that dance provided was irresistible. From then on, I knew I wanted to pursue dance as a lifelong passion.

 

What is your preferred dance style now?

I appreciate and respect all dance styles, but my preferred style has evolved. I have done classical ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, and many other dance styles. Currently, I find myself most drawn to contemporary dance. It allows me to blend various techniques and emotions seamlessly.

 

What about your favorite piece of music to dance to?

Choosing a favorite piece of music to dance to is a bit like choosing a favorite child — it’s challenging because there are so many beautiful options. However, if I had to pick one, I’d say dancing to Ludovico Einaudi’s “Nuvole Bianche” is a truly mesmerizing experience.

The delicate piano melodies and emotional depth of the composition create a canvas for me to express a wide range of emotions through movement. It’s a piece of music that touches my soul and inspires me every time I perform.

 

What does your typical day look like as a professional dancer?

My typical day as a professional dancer is a well-structured mix of physical training, rehearsals, and personal preparation. I usually start my day with a morning stretching and warm-up routine to limber up my body and prevent injuries. This is followed by several hours of intense training and practice to work on technique, flexibility, and stamina.

In the afternoon, I often have rehearsals with a dance company or for a specific performance. These rehearsals can be physically demanding and require a lot of concentration and collaboration with fellow dancers and choreographers.

Because of this, my evenings are typically dedicated to self-care and recovery, including stretching, massage, and sometimes physical therapy to ensure my body stays in top condition. Dancers need to prioritize self-care to prevent injuries and maintain peak performance.

 

What are the pros and cons of being a professional dancer?

In my opinion, being a professional dancer is incredibly rewarding but comes with challenges.

Pros of being a professional dancer:

  • Dance allows me to express myself and communicate emotions uniquely and powerfully.
  • The satisfaction of perfecting a challenging routine or delivering a mesmerizing performance is unparalleled.
  • Dancing keeps me in excellent shape, promoting strength, flexibility, and endurance.
  • Also, I travel to various cities and countries to perform, which is a fantastic way to experience different cultures.

Cons of being a professional dancer:

 The rigorous training and performances can take a toll on the body, leading to injuries and fatigue.

  • The income of a professional dancer can be unpredictable and may provide less financial stability than some other careers.
  • The industry’s highly competitive nature and securing roles or contracts can be challenging.
  • Dance often requires long hours of training and rehearsals, leaving limited time for other pursuits.

 

What about the evening and weekend work – how does that fit into your life?

Evening and weekend work is a significant part of a dancer’s life. Many performances, especially in the world of professional dance, take place during evenings and weekends. While this can sometimes conflict with personal commitments or social activities, it’s a sacrifice that dancers are willing to make for their art.

Balancing this schedule requires careful planning and time management. I often need to prioritize rest and recovery during my free time to ensure I am in the peak condition for performances. It can be challenging, but the love for dance and the satisfaction of delivering a remarkable performance makes it all worthwhile.

 

How much do you train?

I train rigorously to maintain my skills and improve as a dancer. On an average day, I dedicate around 4 to 6 hours to training, which includes warm-up exercises, technique drills, and practice sessions for upcoming performances or choreography.

Additionally, I engage in strength and conditioning exercises to enhance my physical fitness and prevent injuries. Also, the amount of training can vary based on the specific demands of a project or performance season. During intense periods of preparation, my training hours may increase significantly.

 

Do you get to travel much?

Yes, one of the exciting aspects of being a professional dancer is the opportunity to travel. I often perform in various cities and countries, both nationally and internationally. These travel experiences are enriching and provide a chance to connect with diverse audiences and cultures.

Travelling as a dancer allows me to showcase my art in different places and share my passion with a global audience, which is truly rewarding.

 

Have you got any favorite equipment or costumes that you would particularly recommend?

Choosing dance equipment and costumes can significantly enhance your performance and overall experience as a dancer. While preferences may vary based on dance styles and personal taste, here are a few recommendations:

 

Equipment:

  1. I invest in high-quality dance footwear suitable for your chosen style. Proper footwear is essential for stability and preventing injuries.
  2. Resistance Bands are additional to my training routine for strength and flexibility.
  3. Also, foam roller is excellent for self-myofascial release, helping to alleviate muscle tightness and soreness.

 

Costumes:

  1. I ensure that my costumes fit well, so I can move in them comfortably. Ill-fitting costumes can restrict movements and affect dancers’ confidence on stage.
  2. I mostly choose costumes made from breathable materials to prevent overheating during performances.
  3. Lastly, I look for costumes that enhance the storytelling aspect of my dance. Sometimes, a well-designed costume can elevate the overall impact of a performance.

Comfort and functionality are always my priority when selecting dance equipment and costumes. They complement my dance style and help me perform at my best.

 

How important are the things you eat as a dancer? Do you plan a diet of specific foods to support your training?

Yes! Nutrition plays a vital role in a dancer’s life. What you eat can directly impact your energy levels, stamina, and overall performance. I ensure a balanced diet with the help of my friend/doctor’s support.

  1. I maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from different food groups, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fruits, and vegetables.
  2. I avoid dehydration; so i drink a lot of water. Because even mild dehydration can affect physical and mental performance. I drink sports drinks to replenish electrolytes.
  3. I pay a lot of attention to meal timing. I ensure a balanced meal a few hours before rehearsals or performances, ensuring sustained energy.
  4. After training, I consume a snack or meal with a good balance of carbohydrates and protein to aid recovery.
  5. Also, I’m mindful of portion sizes to avoid feeling too heavy or bloated during physical activities.
  6. I steer away from sugary snacks and processed foods, as they can lead to energy crashes.

 

What advice do you have out there for dancers who are just starting out?

To aspiring dancers who are just beginning their journey, to succeed, consider these pointers from my experience:

  1. Cultivate a deep passion for dance and approach it with dedication. This art form requires commitment and hard work.
  2. Practice regularly and consistently. Improvement in dance comes with time and effort.
  3. Prioritize your physical well-being. Warm up before dancing, stay hydrated, and listen to your body to prevent injuries.
  4. Enroll in reputable dance classes with experienced instructors who can provide proper guidance and technique.
  5. Don’t limit yourself to one style. Experiment with various dance forms to discover what resonates with you the most.
  6. Embrace opportunities to perform. It helps build confidence and stage presence.
  7. Continually seek inspiration from other dancers, performances, and art forms. Inspiration can fuel your creativity. Watch dance shows, exhibitions and performances
  8. Understand that progress may not always be linear. There will be challenges, but perseverance is key.
  9. Dance is a lifelong journey of learning. Stay humble and open to constructive feedback.
  10. Finally, enjoy the journey. Dance is not just about the destination but the joy of movement and expression.

What do you like to do when you’re not dancing?

Well! When I’m not dancing; I enjoy exploring other creative outlets. I have a deep love for the arts, so you might find me attending theatre performances art exhibitions, or even trying my hand at painting or writing.

I also value my downtime, so I cherish moments of relaxation with a good book, a cup of tea, or spending time with loved ones. I need to have a balance between the intensity of dance and the serenity of everyday life.

 

What are you up to for the rest of the day?

I’ll focus on self-care and recovery for the rest of the day. After a demanding training session earlier, I’ll dedicate time to stretching, foam rolling, and a soothing Epsom salt bath to rejuvenate my muscles.

Later in the evening, I plan to watch a dance movie that has been on my list for a while. It’s a perfect way to unwind and gain inspiration for future performances.
